Saint George slaying a Dragon – a Custom in Serres

Unique custom that revives every year in Neo Souli, Serres!
According to the tradition of the area, in the old days a dragon locked the water of the village and to release it he asked every year a village resident who had to be chosen by lot.
But once the fate fell to the princess of the village. As they led her to the place of terrible martyrdom, she pleaded with God to save her.
And then St. George appeared miraculously on his horse, having in his hands a cross and a pole and killed the terrible dragon!
To the thanksgiving of the prince, Saint George only asked her as a favor, to build a church in the village, so it happened!
