Thassos is an attractive place with history going back as far as ancient times and is girdled with myths. According to one of them, Zeus took shelter on Thassos after kidnapping the Phoenician queen, Europe. The most interesting sightseeing in Thassos is the Ancient Agora, a site with old temples, remains of sanctuaries, an Ancient Theatre and other buildings. Very interesting is also the Monastery of Archangel Michael, protector of the island, with great view to the sea. Many hiking paths cross the centre of Thassos, leading to old castles, mountain peaks and traditional villages, such as Panagia, Potamia and Theologos, where a nice folklore museum is found.
